Why Fall is One of the Best Times for an Engagement Session on Martha’s Vineyard

There’s something especially charming about Martha’s Vineyard in the fall. The summer crowds have quieted, the light becomes softer and downtown Edgartown takes on an entirely different feel. With colorful foliage lining the streets, crisp coastal air and beaches that feel almost private, it’s one of my favorite times of year for an engagement session.

For this session, we began wandering through downtown Edgartown, stopping wherever the light and scenery caught our attention. One of the things I love most about photographing engagement sessions here is how walkable everything is. Within just a short stroll, you can photograph classic white clapboard homes, tree-lined streets, historic architecture, the harbor and the beach—all without ever needing to drive.

As the afternoon continued, we made our way toward the harbor and the iconic Edgartown Lighthouse. No matter the season, it’s one of my favorite places to start an engagement session. Between the sweeping views of the water, the sandy shoreline, and the golden light just before sunset, it’s easy to see why it’s one of Martha’s Vineyard’s most recognizable landmarks.

We also stopped near the Harbor View Hotel, whose timeless architecture and beautifully maintained grounds make it a wonderful backdrop for portraits. Even without staying at the hotel, the surrounding area offers some of the prettiest scenery in Edgartown.

One of my favorite things about photographing couples on Martha’s Vineyard is that every engagement session feels relaxed. Rather than rushing from one location to the next, we simply explore together, allowing plenty of time for candid moments while also creating portraits that feel polished and natural. My approach is always to give gentle direction while leaving room for genuine interaction, resulting in photographs that feel effortless and true to you.
